A recent decision by the Employment Appeal Tribunal has implications for employers who do not include regular overtime in holiday pay.

Many employers in the UK pay holiday pay at the basic rate of pay for an employee’s normal weekly working hours. Overtime payments are not included. Read More→

Christmas Cheer

Monday, December 8th, 2014

Works Christmas parties are a great way to let your hair down and enjoy a few drinks with colleagues. Just be careful though that you don’t do something which you may later regret.

A works party is still a work function and inappropriate behaviour could get you into trouble. Read More→

Managing Bereavement

I want to talk about a subject that many people find difficult to deal with: bereavement leave and support.

Why is it that we have legislation setting out an employee’s entitlement to paid leave for the happy events in life such as maternity, paternity and adoption but nothing for the stressful time when bereavement leave is needed. Read More→

Abolition of employers SSP rebate

Monday, February 17th, 2014

Following an independent review of sickness absence in 2011 the Government has decided to abolish the employers rebate on payments of statutory sick pay (Percentage Threshold Scheme) from the end of the 2013/14 tax year.

This rebate is very welcome by many small employers who often have quite low National Insurance costs. Unfortunately from now on the total cost of SSP will fall on the employer. However, employers will be able to reclaim 2014 SSP payments up to the end of the 2015/2016 tax year. Read More→

Looking the part

Friday, January 10th, 2014

Does it really matter how you dress for an interview these days when most of us like to dress casually whenever we can?

From my experience with a wide range of employers the answer is yes it does matter how you present yourself. You really do have to look the part.
